Details of vinification and oaking:
This is from a block contiguous with one of our cabernet sauvignon vineyards. It has a stoney decomposed-granite soil. Typically we would blend all of the wine into one of our Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings, but we were left with several unused barrels from the excellent 2015 vintage and decide to do a limited-release bottling. The grapes were harvested in early-March into small lug boxes and then cooled overnight before de-stemming and crushing into open fermentation tanks. The must was gently hand-punched down 3-4 times a day until dryness and then pressed and racked to small oak for 22 months maturation. A range of French oak was used, 30% new with the balance 2nd and 3rd-fill. The wine was bottled with no fining and no filtration.
Petit Verdot is one of the classic blending varieties of Bordeaux. Because it can be so intense, it is seldom bottled on its own. This wine has the typical strongly perfumed violet and blackberry nose. The palate is quite rich with very fine velvet-like tannins. With proper cellaring, this wine should age for 10+ years.
